Black Belt Terminology - 2nd Degree
Pattern:- Eui Am (45 movements).
Eui Am is the pseudonym of Son Byong Hi, leader of the Sam-Il movement on 1st March 1919. The 45 movements refer to his age when he changed the name of Dong Hak (Oriental Culture) to Chondo Kyo (Heavenly Way) religion in 1905. The pattern diagram represents his indomitable spirit displayed whilst devoting his life to the prosperity of his nation.
Belt:- Black
Black belt is the opposite of white, indicating the wearer's proficiency and maturity in Taekwon-do. It also represents the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.
Origins of Eui Am
•Born 1861
•1884 – founded the Dong Hak religion
•Made straw sandals and recited “Incantation of Twenty-One Letter” 30k times a day
•Gabo Dong Hak revolution
•1897 – Ordained 3rd great Dong Hak leader
•1905 – changed to “Kyondo Kyo” in attempt tto appease
•Sam Il Movement – arrested, released due to illness. Died 1922
Pattern:- Choong Jang (52 movements).
Choong Jang is the pseudonym given to General Kim Duk Ryang who lived during the Yi Dynasty (14th Century). The pattern diagram ends in a left handed attack to symbolise the tragedy of his death aged 27 in prison.
Origins of Choong Jang
•Born 1567
•Promoted to General in 1592 – Commander of Homan in 1594
•Nicknamed “Tiger Wing” because of his bravery. Earned during a raid
•1595 – Arrested after falsified charges of killing a slave girl
•Later implicated in rebellion of Lee Mong Hak
•1595 – Sentenced to death – later exhonerated
Pattern:- Juche (45 movements).
•Juche is the philosophical idea that man is the master of everything and therefore decides and determines his destiny. It is said that this idea was rooted on the Paektu Mountain. The diagram represents this mountain.

•DPRK adopted it in 1972
•“Self-reliance” – “master of own self, own world and own destiny”
•Establishing Juche means, in a nutshell, being the master of revolution and reconstruction in one’s own country”
•1970’s – changed to; Leader is the brain of the people, and the Korean Worker’s Party the nervous system to the body of the people
